Ichthyofauna and fish population in the Koigorodsky National Park rivers

V.I. Ponomarev
Section: Population ecology
For the first time, information has been obtained on the composition of the ichthyofauna and the structure of the fish population in the main watercourses of the Koygorodsky Federal National Park (KFNP), which was established in 2019. The KFNP territory is characterized by a dense network of small forest rivers and streams in the basins of the Kobra and Vyatka rivers, which are part of the Volga River system. The KFNP also includes the headwaters of the Senyuk River (which is part of the Northern Dvina River system). Field studies were conducted in September–October 2020, March–June 2021, April and October 2023, and August 2025, using classical research methods. In total, 11 fish species of five families have been identified in the KFNP watercourses: Alburnus alburnus, Gobio gobio, Leuciscus idus, Leuciscus leuciscus, Rutilus rutilus, Phoxinus phoxinus, Esox lucius, Lota lota, Barbatula barbatula, Gimnocephalus cernua, and Perca fluviatilis. Rutilus rutilus dominates everywhere in the Suran River, and G. cernua plays the role of a subdominant. Two species – A. alburnus and R. rutilus predominate in the upper reaches of the Letka River. Gobio gobio dominates, and the G. cernua being slightly less common in the sections of the Mytets River within the KFNP territory. The fish population is represented by a single species, P. phoxinus in the upper reaches of the Senyuk River. The resource potential of the fish population is noted to be poor in the upper reaches of the Mytets and Letka rivers. In the future, it is promising to conduct studies of the fish population in the KFNP’s rivers during different seasons, with a particular focus on the Fedorovka River basin located in the southern part of the reserve.
